Protect Yourself: Don’t Delay Software Updates

How do you react when you’re notified of a software update? Do you update immediately? Do you postpone?

It’s best practice to install software updates on your devices to fix security risks. This can be on your phone’s software or app updates.

Let’s be honest, it’s easy to click or tap “Remind me later” – but should you really put it off?

Update Software for Safety

Truthfully, you should think twice before delaying a software update. While it might seem trivial, keeping software up to date is an easy way to stay safer online.

  • Turn on automatic updates – Automatic updates make the software update process convenient. Search for “automatic updates” under the device’s settings.
  • Watch for notifications – Not every update can be delivered or installed automatically. Devices – cell phones, tablets, laptops – usually notify you that updates need to be run. It’s important to install *ALL* updates, especially for web browsers and antivirus software.
  • Install updates as soon as possible – When notified about software updates, especially critical updates, install them as soon as possible. Cyber criminals won’t wait, so neither should you.

update software promptly

If a cybercriminal gets into a device through a security flaw, they will look for personal information and sensitive data to exploit. Technology providers “patch” security weak spots as quickly as possible – but you have to install released updates to be protected.

Software updates can also:

  • Fix bugs
  • Improve performance
  • Install the latest features
